Better for you staple products are increasingly sporting the Heart Symbol on their packaging to indicate a better choice for consumers as it is seen as guaranteeing a healthier amount of fats and salt, as well as, sometimes, sugar and fibre, in the product. As the symbol is gaining awareness amongst consumers, more health and wellness staple food launches are expected to feature the Heart Symbol.
With rising consumer health awareness combining with increasing concern about the environment and animal welfare issues to support demand, vegan and plant-based products are likely to increase in popularity during the forecast period. However, gluten free is expected to see the largest incremental growth in staple foods over 2022-2027, with retail sales expanding by EUR43 million to reach EUR429 million in 2022 constant value terms.
Consumers will increasingly be concerned not only with having the right dietary habits for themselves, but also with animal welfare and the impact of meat-based diets on the environment. As a result, dairy free is anticipated to realise growth in staple foods over the forecast period.
