The recent implementation of Argentina’s new food labelling laws is set to present additional challenges to all major players in staple foods in 2022, with all of the industry’s leading names having already devised strategies to manage the impact of the new law and maintain the interest of consumers. At the centre of these strategies lie the launch of new, healthier products that are lower in sugar, low in salt and low in fat and therefore able to avoid having to carry warning labels.
As mentioned above, the consumer base for gluten free staple foods is expected to continue expanding in Argentina during the forecast period, despite the relatively low numbers of local consumers that are required to avoid consuming gluten for medical reasons. This is because of the interest that many consumers have in maintaining very good gut health, a trend that has remained very strong during the post-pandemic era.
The forecast period is expected to see increasingly intense legislative and regulatory pressures surrounding the use of high levels of added sugar, fat and salt in a wide range of packaged food and drinks in Argentina. This will inevitably have a positive impact on demand for low salt staple foods, with the desire to avoid having to print a black octagon warning of high salt content on product packaging likely to motivate industry players to develop low salt versions of many of their most popular products.
