Volume sales of cigarettes continued to decline in 2023. Government anti-tobacco initiatives, a decrease in smoking prevalence and growth in illicit trade challenged legal sales.
Although Panama continues to boast strong real GDP growth, relatively low unemployment and inflation from a regional perspective, the country experienced some political unrest in 2023, stemming from the Cobre Panamá, Central America’s copper mine.
There were no major changes in terms of public attitudes or perceptions of tobacco consumption in 2023. Panama maintains a very strict regulatory environment on this front, which does not encourage or foment a strong culture of smoking, regardless of the tobacco product in question.
Unlike other countries in the region, the tobacco industry does not play a major role in Panama’s economy and local commercial tobacco cultivation remains at a minimal level.
In 2022 Panama's port traffic mobilised 8.5 million TEUs (the unit used to measure transport for containers).
