The economic instability and impact of inflation, close to 100%, put enormous pressure on the private and public sectors, which tempered some of the industry's growth as consumers continued to reduce or watch their spending. This was especially the case with items that are not considered household essentials, like tobacco products.
During 2022, the landscape witnessed the growth of local players, which produced economy cigarettes, aligning with consumers needs during the ongoing economic crisis and falling consumer purchasing power.
Over the review period, consumers of tobacco products shifted back to distribution channels frequented before the outbreak of COVID-19. Smokers resumed their stops at convenience stores and forecourt retailers, while newsagent-tobacconists/kiosks saw the return of their regular clients.
Tobacco sales are forecast to decline in Argentina over the forecast period. The sale of economy and ultra-low cigarettes driven by local companies has generated more affordability for low- and middle-income social groups.
