With the exception of cigarettes, tobacco products - such as cigars and cigarillos, heated tobacco, and e-vapour products - commanded growth in 2022. The decline in smoking prevalence and governmental support for smokeless alternatives such as heated tobacco and vapour products contributed to lower volume sales of cigarettes during the year.
With the recovery of the Philippine economy in 2022, there was some normalisation of spending that benefited heated tobacco and e-vapour products, in particular. The increased availability of heated tobacco products such as Iqos and MOK further fostered the intent of some smokers to opt for smokeless alternatives.
Philip Morris Fortune Tobacco Corp (PMFTC) has maintained its leadership in cigarettes in the context of the contracting volume sales of the past few years. The tobacco giant is making considerable efforts to invest in tobacco heating devices, Iqos, and heated tobacco sticks, HEETS.
The bulk of cigarettes are sold in other grocery retailers, as the major players in this category, Philip Morris Fortune Tobacco Corp (PMFTC) and JT International (Philippines) Inc have achieved deep penetration of sari-sari stores in the Philippine market. However, there has been a notable bolstering of the distribution of heated tobacco and e-vapour products through modern retail channels such as tobacco specialists in malls, convenience stores, and e-commerce.
The forecast period looks positive for the tobacco industry with the exception cigarettes. The cigarettes category is expected to see decline given the unitary taxation that is placing pressure on cigarette manufacturers, with the shrinking price differences between economy and mid-priced cigarettes posing particularly notable challenges.
