Tobacco use continues to play a significant role in Angolan society, although the review period saw changes in this respect as acceptance of smoking and tobacco use is declining. Nevertheless, Angola’s tobacco industry remains important to the national economy because it generates significant revenues for the government of Angola as well as employing numerous Angolans, both directly and indirectly.
The National Statistics Institute estimates that 16% of the Angolan population are smokers. Despite efforts to combat poverty, Angola lacks the conditions for an average annual growth of 16%, which would be necessary to reduce the high poverty rate by 2030.
Tobacco products are widely distributed in Angola. This is especially true for cigarettes, which are easily accessible in urban areas.
