In 2023, Tanzania's tobacco industry has experienced significant growth and transformation. The country's tobacco production surged from 50,000 tonnes to 122,858 tonnes in the 2023/2024 period.
Various cultural and religious barriers play a key role in limiting consumption of tobacco in different parts of Tanzania. The majority of the local population identify as either Muslim or Christian and the more conservative elements of each of these groups believe that it is unacceptable to smoke in public, with young people smoking in front of their parents or elders considered extremely disrespectful.
Tobacco is the second largest export crop in Tanzania, representing between 30% and 35% of national exports each year. Therefore, the local tobacco cultivation and manufacturing industry remains of vital importance to the national economy.
