Positive growth was seen in tobacco in Myanmar in 2023 as official retail volume sales of cigarettes continued to rise. However, much tobacco use stems from informal sales of betel quids and hand-rolled cheroots, as well as illicit sales of smuggled cigarettes and parallel imports.
Tobacco in Myanmar registered another positive sales performance in 2023 as consumers returned to their pre-pandemic lifestyles, spending much more time outside of the home working and socialising. In particular, during 2023 local people took the opportunity to catch up with friends and family on-trade outlets such as teashops and nightlife establishments such as bars and clubs on a more regular basis and this triggered a higher incidence of social smoking, pushing demand for cigarettes and cigars, as well as the traditional hand-rolled cheroots that are popular among much of the local population and which fall outside the scope of Euromonitor International research.
Despite the current unfavourable sociopolitical situation in Myanmar, the country’s GDP grew by 2.8% in 2023 and is expected to increase by a further 3.
While retail sales of cigarettes continue to rise, the size of the consumer base for e-vapour products cigarettes continues to expand, despite the sale and use of these products remaining in a legal grey area. Among the main reasons for the increasing interest in e-vapour products and vaping are the reputation that these products have for being less harmful in comparison with cigarettes, while peer pressure and the image that vaping has as a lifestyle choice also plays a role, especially among younger adults.
Towards the end of the review period, legitimate players across Myanmar’s tobacco industry faced numerous logistics challenges stemming from prolonged closures of border points due to internecine regional conflicts between the Myanmar military and revolutionary forces. This has created severe delays in cross-border transportation and the import tobacco products, resulting in regular disruptions and delays to supply chains, which in turn has created stock shortages among legal cigarette brands.
