Despite declining volume sales, the value growth of cigarettes has remained positive in 2022, due to the inflated prices of products. However, consumers continue to show a preference for premium cigarette brands compared to lower-priced options.
Kuwait continues to lead the GCC in terms of smoking prevalence, with 40% of men and 3% of women residents in the nation being classified as regular smokers, according to sources from the Ministry of Health. Attitudes towards men smoking in Kuwait are generally quite relaxed but it is still frowned upon for women to smoke.
Recent years have seen the Kuwaiti Ministry of Health become more proactive in combatting smoking amongst younger consumers, especially in rural areas where teenagers have limited access to athletic facilities and extracurricular activities. During 2021 for example, the Ministry of Health launched its stop smoking assistance programme entitled Help to Quit Smoking.
Kuwait is a compact country with a modest population that is concentrated largely in its capital Kuwait city and a string of urban settlements along the Gulf coast. Moreover, the country’s infrastructure is extremely well-developed, while its retailing industry is dominated by modern retail outlets, located mostly in shopping centres.
