The cost of food in Ghana increased by 54% in June 2023, compared to June 2022. Annual inflation sat at 42% in May 2023.
With the removal of all Coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions, more Ghanaians became more interested in dining outside in 2022 and 2023, especially wealthier demographics. In addition to boosting sales of consumer foodservice establishments, this drove the growth of street food, directly positively impacting the demand for staples foods like rice, pasta, processed meat (eg chicken) and seafood.
Many consumers shifted towards more affordable brands as prices of staple foods continued to increase fast, without corresponding increases in wages and salaries.
More consumers shifted away from modern grocery retailing to open markets to shop for staple foods. Even for many middle- and upper-income consumers, who find shopping in modern grocery channels more convenient, the open market gained appealing.
Consumers are expected to shift further towards small local grocers and open markets for staple foods as prices in modern grocery channels are set to continue to increase due to rises in taxes and other levies.
