Volume sales of staple foods saw slow growth in 2023 while values rose due to inflationary pressures. The normalisation of lifestyles in the wake of the pandemic reduced the home cooking trend and lowered demand for products such as shelf stable beans and tomatoes as well as pasta and rice.
In 2023, the packaged food market in Honduras continued to register inflationary trends, although to a lesser extent than the previous year. The return to pre-pandemic habits was reflected in a greater consumption of food outside the home, helping consumer foodservice sales to recover.
In Honduras, most people eat three meals a day comprised of breakfast, lunch and dinner, with lunch being the most significant and largest daily meal. In the past, the typical traditional Honduran diet was comprised of starches, fresh fruit, and meat, usually in Caribbean-style dishes.
Although Honduras' GDP grew in 2023, growth is expected to be below the inflation rate, which is estimated at 5.1%.
Although there are some rural areas to which access is a little more complex, generally a wide variety of products are available nationwide. However, in some urban areas, there are neighbourhoods that are controlled by maras (gangs) who make the distributors pay a "war tax" in order to distribute their goods to stores.
From 2024, staple foods sales are projected to register sustained, albeit moderate, growth in retail volume terms. Certain foods are already characterised by high levels of consumption, such as tortillas or rice.
