Demand has declined for most staple foods due to price increases and the general rising cost of living. A high rate of inflation rate has made prices unstable leading to almost weekly rises in the prices of essential products, exacerbated by the fact that there is no market monitoring of price control.
Most people eat three meals a day, which includes breakfast, lunch and dinner, taking breakfast at around 08.00hrs, lunch at around 14.
Over the review period, there has been considerable social change in the country, with consumers adopting a wider variety of food. Busy lifestyles, changes in cooking facilities and the introduction of new international foods have boosted demand for staple foods with most urban households opting for easy to cook or time-consuming snacks.
Most consumers still use small local grocers, outdoor markets and street vendors for their food shopping, with many lacking access to modern grocery retailers. Even in the capital city of Dhaka, most people still use small local grocers.
Over the forecast period, inflation is set to remain problematic which will continue to place pressure on average household incomes. However, as staple foods are largely regarded as essential products in Bangladesh, demand will be sustained although consumers will be more cautious in their spending.
