Across the forecast period, carbonates will suffer from rising competition from other growing categories, particularly juice and RTD tea, which are perceived as healthier. Carbonate brand owners will continue to focus on new flavours and pack formats to attract consumers.
Carbonates players are increasingly focusing on their corporate social responsibility programmes. This is reflective of changes that have been seen in general consumer behaviours and attitudes in Romania, with affluent urban dwellers, in particular, increasingly reluctant to engage with brands whose activities and practices they disapprove of.
Reduced sugar carbonates will gain more ground as consumers will avoid sugary drinks for health reasons. Furthermore, the increase of VAT from 9% to 19% for drinks with sugar content will make regular carbonates more expensive, leading consumers to be less inclined to purchase them.
