Given the uncertain economic environment, consumers will be reluctant to spend money on non-essential and expensive products in the early part of the forecast period and will be more price conscious in their purchases of products that they deem to be indispensable. While mass beauty and personal care may see some negative effect of consumers cutting down on non-essentials, the segment is expected to benefit from consumers shifting to mass products in areas that are used on a daily basis or are considered to be essential, such as, for example, oral care, deodorants, and body wash/shower gel.
The challenging economic environment and declining consumer purchasing power are obvious reasons for the decline in demand for luxury products. However, the migration to products with a mass positioning is being given added impetus by the fact that mass market products are increasingly being perceived as offering similar benefits to luxury beauty and personal care products, but at much lower price points.
