Diplom Is is attempting to battle weaker sales in impulse ice cream with a new marketing campaign for the summer of 2024: the traditional ice cream Gullpinne (meaning gold stick) will have five products presented with an ice-stick cast in 18 carat gold hidden in random ice cream counters around Norway for consumers to find. The initiative is designed to boost buzz and momentum as impulse ice cream has begun to stagnate.
More broadly, ice cream is set to record an overall decline at a modest rate in retail volume terms early in the forecast period. However, plant-based ice cream will continue to show growth and momentum, driven by people striving to make healthier lifestyle choices and increasing awareness around plant-based eating.
Take-home ice cream is expected to struggle during the forecast period. One major reason behind the this is that Norwegian consumers are returning to old consumption habits, with a reigniting interest in impulse ice cream.
