While coffee looks set to record another negative performance in retail volume terms in 2024, the rate of decline is anticipated to be lower than in 2023. Overall sales are then expected to tip back into positive territory in 2025 and increase steadily over the rest of the forecast period.
Fresh coffee beans is expected to show the fastest growth in retail volume sales over the forecast period. It will remain the chief beneficiary of increasing consumer sophistication, while the strong presence of more affordable brands and private label products in the category will also help to widen its appeal.
While the share of coffee retail volume sales generated via e-commerce in the Netherlands declined over 2022-2023, this was mainly because reduced concern about COVID-19 and the ending of related restrictions saw most people return to regularly buying such products in brick-and-mortar stores. The long-term trajectory for this channel in the category is positive, hence it is expected to make further progress over the forecast period.
