Although Taiwan experienced two major waves of COVID-19 in May 2021 and May 2022 separately, the reopening of the border from Q4 2022 will enable retail tissue to return to pre-COVID levels from 2023 and beyond. However, retail prices could continue increasing slightly due to rising inflationary pressure and rising raw material costs, logistics and insufficient manpower issues.
Retail tissue continued to be characterised by two domestic and two international manufacturers in 2022. Local companies Yuen Foong Yu and Cheng Loong Corp ranked first and third in retail tissue, after Kimberly-Clark fell into second spot in 2020.
Despite hypermarkets and supermarkets remaining major channels, retail e-commerce started growing much faster after the onset of COVID-19 in Taiwan. After May 2022, more consumers started purchasing products via major websites, with this trend persisting after the pandemic began to recede.
