Consumer health registered strong sales growth in Qatar in 2023 thanks to strong purchasing power and rising interest in leading healthy lifestyles. The country’s high obesity rate has combined with the sharpened focus on health and wellbeing that has emerged from the COVI-19 pandemic to drive sales as consumers are interested in minimising their chances of succumbing to serious illness.
Overall, consumer health in Qatar recorded further strong retail current value growth in 2023. Demand remained robust, as consumers in the country continued to be increasingly health-conscious, knowledgeable of available products and engaged in the proactive self-management of their health.
The interruptions that the COVID-19 pandemic caused to global supply chains represented a huge wake-up call for the government of Qatar as it laid bare the country’s reliance on imports for a wide variety of essential products. This led to a more intense push towards greater self-reliance as a nation, a process that had already been building since around 2017, as Qatar looks to become increasingly, if not completely, self-sufficient in many areas.
Put simply, Qatar is one of the richest nation states in the world. As a result, people generally benefit from a high standard of living and strong purchasing power.
As one of the richest countries in the world, Qatar has witnessed tremendous investment and growth in its infrastructure in recent years. This has not only been seen in the country’s capital Doha, but also in other developing cities such as Lusail.
The Pharmacy and Drug Control Department (PDCD), which operates under the auspices of the Ministry of Public Health, handles the registration of OTC products by ensuring proper registration and quality control to regulate supply and consequent consumption of them. Labelling of these products is in both English and Arabic so as to meet the needs of the local population as well as the country’s many expatriates The process for registering and labelling products remains unchanged from last year.
Vitamins and dietary supplements are high in demand in Qatar and this is a reflection of the general deficiencies of vitamin D and vitamin C among the local population as well as the increased demand that has been seen since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Sales of these products are tightly regulated, with the government registering products in the same way as with the registration of OTC medicines as per the actions of the Pharmacy and Drug Control Department (PDCD) under the Ministry of Public Health.
Consumer health is set to become an increasingly important consumer goods industry in Qatar in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Even as the numbers of cases fall and as infections become less severe, the situation is being brought under better control and the country has been opened up fully, with no restrictions on the movements of the general public now in place.
