Consumer health is registering healthy growth rates in Oman in 2023. Growth is being driven by the increasing presence of OTC brands, increasing consumer awareness, an expanding population and an increase in self-medication.
As consumers become more educated about consumer health and self-care the range of products on offer is expanding in Oman with players continuing to introduce products that provide more targeted relief. These are proving to be increasingly appealing to consumers looking for increased efficacy.
Since Oman’s Ministry of Health and the country’s hospitals began running health information and awareness campaigns in 2009, demand for consumer health has been on a consistently upwards trajectory, with strong sales growth seen in most categories throughout the review period. Consumers are generally aware of the best OTC products and brands to use when treating common ailments and most Omanis are happy to self-medicate.
Oman is an affluent country with a well-developed healthcare system. Indeed, all state-run healthcare facilities have a reputation for being efficient and effective.
Despite Oman’s towns and cities being scattered across the country, with 82% of the landscape being desert, it still maintains an excellent road network, which supports the transportation of goods. Thanks to market reforms, the country also has a reliable and stable supply of electricity.
As with all medicines, the sale and marketing of OTC products is strictly regulated in Oman. The regulation of OTC products is undertaken by the Ministry of Health (MoH) and governed by the Pharmacy Practice Law, promulgated under Royal Decree No35/2015.
The manufacture and sale of vitamins are not heavily regulated in Oman. However, some products, specifically vitamin A and vitamin D, are only allowed to be sold without a prescription up to a certain dosage and amount.
Consumer health in Oman is expected to continue seeing solid and stable growth over the forecast period backed by an expanding population, rising GDP per capita, and sustained economic growth. Sales are also likely to be supported by improving brand availability, accessibility and affordability.
