Vending machines in non-captive areas are reducing in number while those machines that remain are struggling to deliver growth. Consumers are becoming more interested in healthier snacks and prepared meals such as fresh baked goods, sandwiches, fresh fruit and salads.
With tobacco products no longer being sold through vending, due to the strict regulations introduced in 2022, foods and hot and cold drinks vending will remain the most important types of vending. The Netherlands is a very densely populated country, which means there is a very tight network of retail outlets.
Rising wages and rising costs in general could provide new opportunities for vending, with a growing number of retailers exploring the opportunities provided by increased automation in stores. For instance, placing several vending machines together offering different products could help overcome the hurdle of limited choice, while it could allow store owners to generate additional turnover with minimal costs.
