The number of vending machines providing tobacco products is predicted to continue declining over the forecast period, supported by restrictive regulations imposed by the government. The restriction is also likely to affect further expansion of tobacco alternatives such as disposable vaping devices and e-vapour liquids containing nicotine, which were initially perceived as viable alternatives, but are increasingly becoming a concern as the government probes rising additive behaviour across teenage users.
Since the pandemic, an increasing number of vending players have been upgrading their machines to accommodate contactless payments. The trend has been supported by the rapid expansion of digital payment solutions such as QR codes, as well as tap-and-go card options that have grown to become a standard across leading South African banks.
As demand rises in underpenetrated areas, innovation in vending products will likely continue to be dominated by wellness offerings such as over-the-counter medicine and personal care. Likewise, the momentum gained by reverse vending machines over the review period will continue increasing, supported by awareness of the environmental impact of wastage in South Africa.
