The year 2022 was a strong year of recovery for alcoholic drinks in Tunisia in current value and volume terms. Almost all restaurants, hotels, bars and remained closed for two years during the COVID-19 pandemic and the re-opening of all establishments has brought Tunisians back, with many enjoying the chance to socialise with a drink after a long absence.
Rising inflation and the substantial price increase of alcoholic drinks in 2022 led to a dynamic rise in current value growth. For example, wine prices jumped by more than 20% in 2022.
Overall, there has been no important changes to the alcoholic drinks category in 2022. Société Frigorifique et Brasserie de Tunis remained the dominant leader in the largest category, beer, and therefore also led overall alcoholic drinks.
Supermarkets and hypermarkets remain the main distribution outlet for alcoholic drinks in 2022. The distribution process of alcoholic drinks is under the control of the Trade Ministry.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the split between off-trade and on-trade has changed somewhat, with the re-opening of restaurants, bars, and hotels and the return of nightlife in Tunisia. Overall, off-trade remains the most important sector compared to on-trade.
Over the forecast period, alcoholic drinks will record strong performance in value and volume terms as consumption of alcoholic drinks returns to healthy patterns post-pandemic. However, price increases and high inflation remains a threat with some consumers expected to look for more affordable brands when in the off-trade and on-trade.
