Costa Rica registered healthy volume growth in alcoholic drinks in 2022. Part of the reason for the positive performance was increased socialising, as society fully opened up post pandemic lockdowns.
Beer continued to be one the most popular alcoholic drink and there was an increasing variety of imported beers, as well as generous discounts to promote volume sales. Appreciation of wine also continued to grow, especially among middle and higher-income consumers, and wine registered higher volume growth than beer.
Benefiting from its dominance across all alcoholic drinks, as well as having a leading presence in soft drinks and packaged food, local player Florida Bebidas SA dominated total volume sales of alcoholic drinks in 2022, accounting for nearly three-quarters of value share. Beer is the most popular alcoholic drink in Costa Rica and Florida Bebidas benefits from being the only industrial beer manufacturer in the country, offering leading brands such as Imperial and Pilsen.
With heightened price sensitivity in 2022, consumers chose to shop in retailers that offered savings. For example, the hypermarket chain, Pequeño Mundo, offered low-cost imported beer, while the warehouse chain PriceSmart offered significant savings on bulk purchases.
With society fully opened up in 2022, and most pandemic restrictions removed, on-trade registered double-digit volume growth. The growth was also supported by a high number of foreign tourists.
The outlook is positive for alcoholic drinks over the forecast period, particularly for beer and wine. However, if inflation remains high, players need to offer promotions and discounts to support volume sales.
