The alcoholic drinks market in Algeria is still relatively underdeveloped, with significantly larger volumes being generated by more traditional categories such as lager, still red wine, whiskies or vodka. The religious environment in what is a Muslim country and long-standing consumption habits tend to hold back the development of new categories such as dark beer, cider/perry or emerging innovative spirits products.
In 2022, the alcoholic drinks market in Algeria saw slightly stronger growth than a year earlier as the country continued to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, which had negatively influenced many categories, resulting in quite a steep fall in sales in 2020, particularly in the on-trade. With the total removal of COVID-19 restrictions in 2022, this had a marked positive impact on the performance of consumer foodservice, with on-trade volumes continuing to claw back some of the losses it experienced in 2020, helping to drive the ongoing recovery of the industry.
There was little movement in the competitive landscape of alcoholic drinks in Algeria in 2022. Domestic production in beer and wine continued to dominate, thanks to the development of the local industry as well as Algeria’s protectionist trade policies, which oblige foreign companies to have a domestic majority shareholding.
Food/drink/tobacco specialists continue to account for nearly all retail sales of alcoholic drinks in Algeria. With no change in the law governing the retail distribution of alcoholic drinks only a limited number of retail outlets are allowed to sell these products, while obtaining a permit for stores for the sale of alcoholic drinks remains very complicated in Algeria.
On-trade sales suffered a steep decline in 2020 due to COVID-19 related restrictions and, while positive growth has since been seen in both 2021 and 2022, the size of the drop in sales in 2020 was so great that it is currently expected that it will only be at the end of the forecast period when sales return to pre-pandemic levels for alcoholic drinks in the on-trade. As Algeria has been emerging from the pandemic, with the easing or lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, both off-trade and on-trade sales have been registering positive growth, with people largely returning to work in offices and a significant portion of consumption going back into foodservice.
Total volume sales of alcoholic drinks are currently expected to return to pre-pandemic levels in 2024, as the revival of more normal social and economic activity drives the recovery of on-trade consumption, while off-trade sales will also continue to grow. Although it is not anticipated that the Algerian economy will be recovering in the immediate future from its multiple crises or be seeing an increase in consumers’ disposable incomes in the near future, consumption of alcoholic drinks is often governed by natural demand.
