The picture was bleak for alcoholic drinks in Dominican Republic in 2022. The war in Ukraine had a negative impact, with the resultant energy crisis leading to high inflation and dampening volume sales somewhat.
Despite high inflation, there continued to be a premiumisation trend, particularly in spirits. Premium offerings of tequila (and mezcal), as well as whiskeys, registered healthy growth.
No major shake-ups were observed in alcoholic drinks in 2022, as the industry remained firmly in the hands of only a few large players. Cervecería Nacional Dominicana SA, owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev NV, continued to dominate, particularly within beer.
In terms of the off-trade channel, small local independent grocers (known as colmados) remained the most important retail channel, as these stores are ubiquitous throughout the country. In addition, in areas where few or no modern retailers exist, they serve as a principal retail outlet for consumers.
While overall, volume sales for alcoholic drinks fell in 2022, the picture was much rosier for on-trade channels, where there was double-digit volume growth. With pandemic restriction removed, people socialised through on-trade channels once again, with volume sales being even higher than pre pandemic levels, as pent-up demand led to a significant boost.
The outlook is positive for alcoholic drinks over the forecast period, particularly for wine and RTDs. However, if inflation remains high, players will need to offer promotions and discounts to support volume sales.
