After a challenging year for cider producers in New Zealand during 2023, the forecast period is expected to see the category record moderate positive growth. While the 2023 CO2 shortage created significant production challenges, especially for smaller players, and with high interest rates and low margins putting huge pressure on the business models of independent cider/perry breweries, particularly those that are more highly leveraged and which have less free cash flow, it is perhaps unsurprising that several cider/perry manufacturers have gone out of business.
It is clear that the inflationary pressures that affected Zealand consumers towards the end of the review period suppressed demand in numerous categories across various fmcg industries, with unfavourable factors including rising fuel prices, shortages of glass bottles and rising labour costs, as well as the shortages of CO2 and apples. These last two factors in particular have placed considerable strain on local production capabilities and were a major driver of high unit price growth within the category over the course of 2023.
The forecast period will inevitably see cider/perry directly with RTDs, a category that in recent years has recorded rapid growth, fuelled by the reinvention of the category by local player Pal’s. Much of this greater focus on RTDs has flowed from the category’s efforts to tap into the health and wellness trend, which has become something of a focal point for New Zealand’s leading alcoholic drinks brands.
