Sales of personal luxury are expected to increase at a CAGR of 4% in current value terms (2% CAGR at constant prices) over the forecast period to reach EUR25.3 billion in 2028.
Designer apparel and footwear (ready-to-wear) will continue to be the biggest personal luxury category, with sales worth EUR10.9 billion in 2028, having recorded a CAGR of 3% in current value terms (2% CAGR at 2023 constant prices) over the forecast period.
After a slight loss of share in 2022, as a consequence of the reopening of stores in city centres, the release of pent-up demand and the pleasure of going shopping in physical retail outlets, e-commerce was back to gaining share in 2023, with this expected to continue in the distribution of personal luxury over the forecast period. Over 2020-2021, due to the absence of store-based sales for a number of months – seven in 2020 and five in 2021 – mainstream players adjusted to the pandemic by boosting their online visibility and increasing sales via e-commerce.
