Ethiopia is experiencing a growing demand for dairy products. However, as a developing country, a large part of the residents do not have access to dairy products.
In 2023, dairy products in Ethiopia is no longer being impacted but the COVID-19 pandemic, but faces a new set of challenges due to the global inflation rates. As a result, categories such as butter and powder milk are witnessing volume decline due to the unessential nature of such products as consumers favour more essential ones instead.
Most Ethiopian people eat three main meals per day: breakfast, lunch and dinner. Snacking is not particularly popular and is common only among young people.
The worst drought in 40 years has pushed local food prices up and this alongside global inflation has led to further pressure on prices. In order to curb this, interest rates have been raised and the local currency has depreciated, making imports in particular even more expensive.
Traditional grocery retailers, mainly open markets, remains the main source of both fresh food and packaged food for the vast majority of consumers and these are often the only food retail channels present in rural areas of the country. In urban areas, independent small grocers are also very common and many people purchase baby food, as well as a wider range of products such as confectionery, rice, pasta and shelf stable processed fruit and vegetables and meat and seafood from these outlets.
Over the forecast period, while dairy products will continue to see growth, the industry will continue to be dampened by the ongoing inflation, the conflict in Ethiopia, and the worldwide increasing oil and fuel prices. However, it is anticipated that once the economy stabilises, consumers will have more disposable income which will in turn boost demand across the industry.
