In 2022, several major trends were significantly impacting the packaging landscape in Australia, reflecting the growing emphasis on sustainability, waste reduction and eco-conscious choices. One key trend is the increasing importance of sustainability in packaging across industries, leading businesses to adopt eco-friendly alternatives like metal beverage cans and flatter PET wine bottles.
As Australia embraces the global sustainability drive, a new recycling plant has become operational in Albury-Wodonga. It is expected to recycle approximately one billion PET beverage bottles a year and reduce Australia’s plastic waste substantially.
Metal food cans, which have traditionally been a popular pack type for soups, continued to lose share in this category in 2022. While metal cans offer a range of benefits, such as protection of the product content and opportunities for creative, 360-degree branding, where they suffer is their eco credentials.
Metal beverage cans were consistently gaining share from PET bottles in soft drinks over the review period due to a number of different factors. For example, they are considered more environmentally friendly as they are highly recyclable.
In June 2022, sustainable packaging player Packamama launched a new wine bottle design using PET instead of glass. These new wine bottles retain the traditional “high shoulder” style of Bordeaux bottles, but come in a much slimmer shape, allowing twice as many bottles to fit in a standard carton as compared to traditional wine bottles.
Sustainable packaging design continued to gain importance in 2022 as beauty and personal care manufacturers introduced new pack types to minimise the use of plastic and boost the recyclability credentials of their packaging. For example, leading player L’Oréal expanded the use of its paper bottle packaging in Australia by using it to package products from its La Roche-Posay and Kiehl’s brands towards the end of 2021.
Against the backdrop of the global sustainability trend, Australians are increasingly likely to demand packaging solutions that reduce waste and support recycling. Surface care players were therefore responding to the demand for more sustainable packaging by introducing refillable containers, along with concentrated refills that use much less plastic and less packaging.
