After the implementation of new labelling legislation at the end of the review period, there is a further factor which could impact low/no/no added sugar soft drinks in the forecast period. Brazil is seeing ongoing discussions about taxation, and the government is currently indicating that products which are high in sugar will likely suffer from a differentiation in taxes, with an increase expected, bundling such products together with what is known as “sin products”.
Demand for organic soft drinks is typically driven by health, as local consumers perceive organic products as more natural and safer than non-organic alternatives. However, as consumers become increasingly concerned with sustainability, many are also seeking organic products due to a desire to protect the planet.
In addition to recent legislation highlighting the sugar content in food and drinks, it also highlights the salt content through front of pack labelling, as overconsumption of salt can lead to high blood pressure and resultant health problems. Although salt content is perhaps less relevant for soft drinks than for packaged food, activity is expected to intensify around the salt content in soft drinks, and the no salt claim is therefore expected to emerge strongly over the forecast period.
